Questions

What people ask before they call

Plain answers to the questions we hear most. Your situation will have its own details; these are a starting point.

How do I know if I have a case?

You don’t need to. Tell us what happened and we’ll tell you, plainly, whether the law gives you a claim, and if not, whether someone else can help.

What does it cost to talk to you?

The first conversation costs nothing. If we take your case, we’ll explain the fee arrangement in writing before you sign anything.

How are your fees paid?

Most of our cases are on contingency: no attorney’s fee unless we recover money for you. You may still owe court costs and case expenses. Some civil rights and consumer laws also make the other side pay attorney’s fees if you win.

How long do I have?

It depends on the claim, and some deadlines are short. Claims against a city or county can need written notice within months. Call as soon as you can, even if you haven’t decided anything.

Will my case go to trial?

Most cases settle, but we prepare every one as if it will be tried. That’s usually what makes a fair settlement possible.

Will anyone find out I called?

What you tell us is confidential, whether or not we take your case. Please don’t send confidential details through the website form; we’ll go over them by phone.

Can you help if it happened outside Birmingham?

Often. We bring cases across the state in federal court, and we’ll tell you if someone closer would serve you better.

What should I do right now?

Write down what happened while you remember it. Keep every letter, text, photo and medical record. Get names of witnesses. Don’t post about it online.

Still not sure where you stand?

That’s what the first call is for.
